Xbox 360 to be lowest-priced next-gen video game console

backtoreality says,
They want to be the lowest priced console and are cutting the "arcade" version to $199 in the US (as well as Japan). Psychologically, the $200 price point is significant for consumers so this is a (desperate?) strategic move to blunt some of the Wii and PS3 momentum.

Article excerpt from cnet.com — "One of the the biggest selling points of Nintendo's Wii Video Game Console since its launch nearly two years ago has been that it was the lowest-priced of the trio of next-generation machines, which also includes Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. To date, the Wii costs $249, while the lowest-priced Xbox , the...

I bought a PS3 last weekend and I am not sure whether I like it yet. I must admit that I do like how it is integrated into one package instead of needing to buy things like adapters, wireless, etc.

I'm still waiting to find the perfect game for it...

Are you enjoying the blueray though? I think this would be one compelling reason to still choose PS3 over the 360, even though I enjoy the 360 quite a bit.

Since I use my TiVo to record HD, blue ray for movies hasn't been all that exciting for me.

Exactly! The main reason I want a PS3 is for the Blueray, other than that I have no reason to get one. There are no games that I want to play that's not already offered on the 360 or Wii. Scratch that, Little Big Planet is a title that looks pretty cool. Sony did their whole E3 presentation with it. The creativity potential in that game is huge. I'm just not ready to spend another $400; hopefully this price reduction will force Sony's hand in to doing the same.

I watched my first Blu-ray movie the other day. Granted, it was No Country For Old Men, so it wasn't full of big explosions and whatnot (but it did have beautiful cinematography, so that should count for something). Seeing that my TV is "only" a 1080i/720p TV and not a 1080p, the difference between Blu-ray and upscaled DVD was negligible (unless you're comparing to a really, really old DVD that had horrible mastering or something). On a huge 1080p TV, it might be worth it.

That being said, it's a nice little (ha! it's huge!) system, but I find myself hardly ever turning it on, since I have an X360. The two things that annoy me, however, about the PS3 is lack of HD cables included in the box (and most people who buy HDMI cables are going to buy them from Best Buy or something and spend $60~$90, which is sad), and the fact that you can't charge the controller while the console is off (and the cable is too damn short to play comfortably from my couch while charging).

Of course, that last comment assumes I've actually got something to play on my PS3, which seems to be the biggest problem :(

The inability to charge the controllers is horrible, the way they periodically barf up the Bluetooth connection is atrocious, and the HD storage management interface is garbage.
I also really dislike the way you have to resync the controller all the time.

Bleah.

Blu-Ray simply isn't a big enough draw for me. I wouldn't mind having a good upscaling DVD player, and if the Blu-Ray was basically attached to that, fine - but I'm not re-buying movies I already have on Blu-Ray, when it's clearly a format with a severely limited lifespan.

To be honest, I've never had the Bluetooth crap out on me. Granted, I haven't really played *that* much, but it's never happened. The controller resync thing is a pain in the arse, though. No idea why that happens.

Probably the only reason I would buy a PS3 would be for the blu-ray. I have an xbox360 that collects dust right now.

I have to agree with helava. Plus now a days if you really want you can actually get a 360 and a low end blu-ray player for the same price as a PS3.lol. Granted the 360 wont have the hard drive and the blu-ray isnt of amazing quality maker but you still get both for if not a little cheaper then a PS3

You wanna win fans try making a system that isn't so damn accident-prone. From hardware failure, to scratching discs to whatever else, I am almost certain the 360 is going to go down in history as one of the most problematic consoles ever.

Unfortunately there is nothing compelling about the Ps3 to make me trade off my 360 for one. I could give a rat about Blu-Ray because I'm frankly not paying 30 bucks for movies and, honestly, DVDs look just fine to me; regardless of what the technical specs say. I dunno how much difference there really is.

Also I imagine I'm possibly the only person on the planet who dislikes the "Dualshock" controllers and prefers the xbox ones.

Addendum: the Wii is a niche-market novelty which has yet to actually prove itself as a "gaming" console. Basically appeals largely to a different audience than either the 360 or PS3 so while its sales are doing well, I don't think its actually doing much to hurt sales of the other consoles so much as it is drawing in NEW customers of its own.
