Article excerpt from mashable.com — "The folks at Microsoft Kitchen dug up some cool quotes from Microsoft employees about the upcoming Windows OS, currently code-named Windows 8. Though it does bring painful memories of what was promised about Vista (the marketing campaign, you may remember, was called "the wow starts now"), Microsoft did partially redeem itself with...

don't go apple either, they are one in the same in this aspect. Just take your PC and put any distro of linux on it depending on the UI you prefer, there are hundreds of great linux distros to chose from. Each directed at a specific niche market and most are 100% free to use.

I am in love with Suse, it has a very nice GUI (Graphical User Interface) Installing is extremely simple, IMHO easier to install than windows. Of course there are always more advanced things you would use a command line for but that same thing applies in windows as well anyway. What I would seriously recommend doing is if you have an old computer lying around or an extra hard drive to temporarily swap in place of the one you use now to try out a few distributions until you find one suiting your needs. There is a good article here with a few great suggestions http://windows2linux.tech-no-media.com/2009/06/what-is-best-linux-distribution-for.html I started out with a switch from windows to suse and I fell in love but suse did require a few configuration changes once installed to get the sound working. After spending a short time using it you will surely be planning a migration to linux but plan it out, back everything up that you wish to keep. Also keep in mind that although there are a number of linux games, you can't install most or all of your typical windows games on linux without use of one of the projects offered for that but I recommend then having a dual boot system with windows xp as the secondary OS to play those games anyway.
