You know, I totally agree with the sentiment of the interview, but coming from Squeenix, it made me laugh. I don't know the last time Square or Enix actually worried about how players would react to story in a way that would affect it as a game. The problem with modern JRPGs is that they are no different than watching a (badly done) anime where you get to play all the "boring" parts (random encounters, run around shopping, etc).

Nothing you do really affects the story. That is not the key to getting games to surpass other media in storytelling.

Couldn't agree more. Half Life tells a better "game story" than Squenix's games. It's a simple story, sure, but it's the right *kind* of story for a game. If you could take Half Life, and make it react even more to the player's actions, then you'd be off to the races.

Yeah, I've been deadlocked in an argument with some ignorant fool on some forums about how there are videogames with substance/quality, then there are literally mindless games. The uneducated baboon still does not understand that videogames are just under form of media and that they can too have great storyline.

But anyway, I just think Square for some reason prefers having a storyline that's "on rails" but at the same time not. But yeah, I've been relatively disappointed with their more "modern" generation of games. But I personally still can't hate FF7 or 8 :p

CoD4 was very intense, excellent plot line. Brilliant resolve. The climax to the plot made my jaw drop.
