Tekken 6 Review
helava says,
I've never been a big fan of Tekken - while I like the concept of the controls, the way the combos are structured sucks. It's all rote memorization and combos - to me, it lacks the strategy and finesse of Street Fighter.
My problem with this review, though, is that basically, they say the online implementation is garbage, then give the game a B+? No. These days, even for a fighter, a quality online experience is not optional - it's MANDATORY.
A broken online mode for a fighter and there's no way that it's better than a C, or a 60%. Same with when Super Smash Bros. Melee came out - a multiplayer game like that with a completely busted online mode, and it's simply *not a good game*. The developers failed in a really, truly, critical way.
And you could argue, somehow, that the single player redeems the broken online mode, but that argument's so insipid it doesn't even warrant a response. Or you could argue that these are games that are meant to be played side-by-side in real life, but if that's the case, take your time machine back to the '90's, put on your Hypercolor shirt and Hammer pants, and have a ball. Me, I'll be living in the future.

Helava, I'm not seeing how the "single player redeems the online" argument is so insipid. Can you elaborate?

Okay, maybe that was a bit of overstatement. :D
The issue is that a game like Tekken is about one thing - multiplayer. Single player has never been the focus of the game. If you're making a game where the focus is multiplayer, having a solid online experience is *required*. Single-sofa multiplayer is definitely *also* a requirement, but these days, a lousy online implementation = a lousy *multiplayer* implementation - and if that's the core of the game, you've fucked up *the core of the game*.

I think it COULD be ok, but nowhere near Mortal Kombat series. Excluding MK vs. DC, Kombat is the best fighter series out there.

mortal kombat better than the street fighter series??? Never.... MK was good till about 3 then if fell off. MK vs DC was just a epic fail

You're hilarious. I think a lot of people on this board actually took your post seriously. But I know you're joking. I understand subtle humor. Nice job!

I'm a huge fighting game fanatic. But Tekken lost me when any noob could pick up a controller, select Eddy Gordo and tap two buttons back and forth with one hand with zero skill and take down a majority of decent-well experienced players.
Such poorly designed game play really is pathetic.
