The engine they are using is called HeroEngine, by Simutronic. I support using off-the-shelf tools & engines for development. I think that if it's a proven tool, then it can dramatically cut down on development time. Of course, if it's not a proven tool, then it can be a nightmare.

Anyone know of or have experience with the HeroEngine? I am also kind of lost on why internal development choices like this results in a press release. Is it to promote the engine developer? Is it to reassure the masses that the project will ship on time? Is it just to get the name of the game in front of the public?

Article excerpt from 1up.com — " BioWare today announced that they'll be using Simutronic's "HeroEngine" for Star Wars: The Old Republic, a game engine that's designed specifically for MMO development. As described by Simutronics, the HeroEngine allows for "real-time" development, allowing teams in different locations to build the world and play the game live on a...

I think they're trying to reassure potential gamers that they have a chance of finishing development of the game and of being able to support a decent user base. That being said, has anyone actually released anything using HeroEngine? I see a couple of awards for it and some games in development, but nothing that's been released. If someone knows more about HeroEngine, I'd definitely like to hear it. Otherwise, I'm not really impressed with the decision.

Decision for the Engine? Well, I have never played Hero's, nor ever heard of it... I dont go far for MMO's, I'v only played 'Knights Online', 'Guild Wars', and nearly wanted to kick puppies after playing 'Second Life' (more like 'Waist of Life')

But a Star Wars MMO??? I might put the 360 down for a bit to try this out. But if it sucks? I'm going to pick up th 360 again and wait PO'd till they get off there a$$'s and make a new 'Jedi Acadamy' for the Next Gen.

Please don't make me kick puppies!!!

I don't go for MMO's either, seeing as how I'd have to pay monthly for them. However, StarWars already has an MMO: Galaxies, although lately I've been told it went down the toilet since the company implemented some stuff and a lot of people have quit playing it because of that.

I've never heard of the "hero" engine but if it works for what they are trying to do, why not use it? No need to reinvent the wheel. I've been looking forward to "The Old Republic" since I first heard it was in development. As for other MMO's, I've played Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, Star Wars:Galaxies (with this one I was living my dream of being a Jedi, though it was disappointing.) and WoW (Sorry, I didn't mean to. It just happened one night). So I've been around the MMO block. Time to wait and see and hope that it lives up to the hype.

As for a StarWars Online I have only played Jedi Acadamy with my brother, Need less to say I went SITH, as he wimped out and stayed JEDI. SO anyways, I'm just hoping it will evolve to a MMO/JediAcadamy standards that not only makes it Fun, but worth saying... "No Time for dinner damn it, Thies Jedi scum must pay!" ... *Achem*... Or something with in that nature.
