ebeast says,
Did he say "friendly" and "takeover" in the same sentence? I'd would have called it a buyout if it was indeed a "friendly takeover". "Takeover" seems to imply unwillingness on the part of the overtaken.

Great, now I've said these words so many times that they have become nonsense words. Takeover. Overtake. Blah blah. :D

Article excerpt from kotaku.com — "Earlier today, we first broke the news that Square Enix had plans to takeover beleaguered game company Tecmo. At the ensuing press conference, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada revealed that this friendly takeover offer wasn't as sudden as it appears. According to Wada, there have been discussions since May with former Tecmo president...

At this point, it probably is a "Friendly Takeover," simply because after the Itagaki lawsuit (Tecmo's most famous developer and Team Ninja, his studio have filed a class action demanding the overtime/bonus pay they were promised by Tecmo's now-ex-President), and after Itagaki's departure and the likely dissolution of Team Ninja, Tecmo's almost entirely worthless as a company.

So, S-E has a lot to gain by just buying the remaining shell of the company - they might be able to keep their technical talent (which has always been quite good), and potentially keep the few IPs (Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, Tecmo Bowl) that are worth anything alive. Who knows, but at this point, it's not likely hostile, simply because Tecmo has nothing left to lose.

The point I was making is more, why isn't it considered a buyout, if it really is friendly? I suppose there is probably some finer point of business deals I am overlooking that keeps it from being classified as a buyout...

In the business sense, I think the terms are often interchangeable (buyout/friendly takeover).

In the more general sense, thinking of examples of friendly takeovers, my marriage comes to mind. Friendly. But definitely a takeover.

Seems to me like this could be a good thing... Square Enix pays off the lawsuits and in return gets a ton of staff who can actually do real gameplay mechanics beyond selecting an action from a menu.

DOA is terrible...
Amazing mechanics, play control, unique fighting system...all in all a fun game.

Why why WHY did they have to ruin it with quasi-soft core polygon porn?!

I'm sorry, but not all gamers are 12 year olds that fap while fighting, or get all giggly when a loincloth parts.

The worst part is when Itagaki refers to the DOA girls as his 'daughters' and then makes DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball 1 and 2.
