Rumor: Dueling Rock Band 2 Tracklists
helava says,
Holy cow, there's a lot of stuff in those rumored lists that I'd be really, really psyched for.
The top ten, for me:
Alice in Chains: Man in the Box
Bon Jovi: Livin' on a Prayer
Duran Duran: Hungry Like the Wolf
Foo Fighters: Everlong
Modest Mouse: Float On
Nirvana: Drain You
Pearl Jam: Alive
Rush: The Trees
Smashing Pumpkins: Today
Social Distortion: I Was Wrong
System of a Down: Chop Suey (how will ANYONE EVER SING THIS?)
Talking Heads: Psycho Killer
The Go-Gos: We've Got the Beat
Blink 182: Dammit
...
Okay, that's more than ten, but there's a whole mess of other songs on there that are definitely awesome, and some I'm sure I'll recognize when I hear 'em. But dang, that's a staggering tracklist.
What would you want in RB2?
1.) Queens of the Stone Age: The Lost Art of Keeping a Secret
2.) Pearl Jam: Evenflow, Jeremy
3.) Nirvana: Come As You Are, Smells Like Teen Spirit
4.) Elastica: Stutter
5.) Flight of the Conchords: Robots
6.) Green Day: American Idiot (the whole album), Insomniac (album)
7.) Guns 'N Roses: Sweet Chile o' Mine, Welcome to the Jungle
...
Hell, the list just goes on and on. How 'bout you?

"There are differing leaks out there regarding the track list for Rock Band 2. Both are unattributed, one to a friend of a friend who got a look at an email from Harmonix to MTV or something. But in the interest of rumormongering, we'll repeat both with the caveat that there is no way of knowing if this stuff is for real or not. But if,...

Some of these songs make me want to weep with happiness. That must make me a huge dork, but there it is, nonetheless.
Also, using the word nonetheless probably makes me a huge dork. I'll just go hide under my desk now. But before I do, let me say how awesome it is that more Bon Jovi is coming down the pipeline. I am a hopeless Bon Jovi fangirl. Plus, Living on a Prayer is definitely the kind of song that can get the whole damn roomful of people singing at the top of their lungs, and that makes the Rock Band experience all the better.
Just for fun, I'd like to see some more glam rock ballads, but ballads tend to feel sluggish on RB. Hitting the perfect groove in RB requires a fast, upbeat, non-repetitive, and somewhat challenging melody progression, with a catchy hook, without becoming two different songs (or 4 different ones, as some of the current RB tracks feel like). For instance, I hate Tom Sawyer as a regular listener of the music, but it's REALLY fun on the guitar. :D Not so fun on singing though, since that man sings like he's got way more estrogen than I do.

Yeah - I get what you mean about being a "good RB song," being somewhat different than just a "good song." I love playing the Hives, even though I can't sing it for s**t, because it's got that "bounce" that gets everyone in the same groove - it's also fast enough that it feels really intense, and requires everyone to really hit it together.
Man. Best game ever.

Sorry, best *multiplayer* game ever. By many metrics, that would also make it the best game ever, but mentally, it's not in the same continuum that the single player games are.

That's a very interesting and provocative comment. How does it place among your best games ever, no matter if it's single player or multiplayer?
Or is the fundamental difference not in the single versus multiplayer, but the storytelling that defines the titles that you've listed in your top five? If that's true, can you think of a multiplayer game that you think has strong story elements?
I had a manager several years ago who would bond with his daughter by playing videogames together. She was into the Thief series, which he liked as well since it was a stealth game, so the character did not have to kill to win. He liked that there were multiple ways to win the game, and that there was a "mission" to accomplish. They were able to play both by giving each other advice and by taking turns playing as the thief, as the other person sat with them.
I know there are hack & slash games that benefit from being played with a partner/team, but are there games with strong storytelling that really lends itself to multiplayer aspects?

I suppose you could make a pretty solid argument that that's one of the big draws of games like World of Warcraft, or even co-op hack & slash games like Phantasy Star Online or Diablo 2.
For me, I think that the experience as a whole is somewhat different between single player and multiplayer - with single player games, I'm looking for an experience to take me away to somewhere new. With a good multiplayer game, it makes me appreciate *here* more. Which is a sort of weird way of looking at it, but I suppose it accurately describes when single player experiences are effective - when they create a sustainable illusion, whereas multiplayer experiences facilitate cooperative or competitive participation, illusion or not.
In terms of where RB sits in the overall continuum, it's probably at roughly the same level as Grim Fandango.
