Article excerpt from vh1.com — "Battle between music games presents obstacles for gamers. There's a new war brewing on the gaming battlefield. But it isn't between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo - it's between three music games: Activision's "Guitar Hero: World Tour," MTV Games' " Rock Band " and newcomer " Rock Revolution " from Just this week, a new " Rock Band "...

That may be so, in terms of the features of the new Guitar Hero World Tour stuff, but I've already got a metric ton of music I love for Rock Band, with more on the way. Getting GHWT would mean closeting all my gear and music and starting from scratch. This is another arena where I think that first-to-market has a significant advantage.

Also, I haven't heard anything about Rock Revolution that truly excites me. At least GHWT has those crazy drum set pics.

How much of a market for plastic musical instruments is there really? Guitar Hero and Rock Band aren't enough?

I can't imagine that people will buy *two* plastic drum kits, much less three. While Guitar Hero and Rock Band both clearly have massive licensing structures in place, Konami's only got the stuff they tend to get for stuff like Karaoke Revolution and DDR.

While the probably J-Rock style won't fly in the US so much, it'll probably do reasonably well in Japan... except that in Japan, they don't have the space to store a suite of plastic instruments.

If they make the *game* compatible with RB/GH's instruments, they maybe stand a chance. Otherwise, forget it.

Guitar Hero was out first, but Rock Band was the first to introduce an cooperative "band" concept with multiple instruments.

I wonder what instrument is next.

All winners.

Well, you could actually make an argument that Konami's Rock Revolution was first, since it's basically the home version of the Guitar Freaks/Drummania arcade combo that's been out since 1999.

But that'd be a real stretch. :D

I think the gap between home and arcade is so vast that you can't really talk about them in the same vein. For instance, you could also compare the Wii Balance Board for the home with Top Skater in the arcade but you are talking about 1) different market segments, 2) different usage behaviors, and 3) different hardware, just to start.
