Resistance 2: Half awesome, half terrible

helava says,
So, when I knew I was getting a PS3, I ordered Resistance 2 from Amazon before it'd even arrived. Though Little Big Planet was the game that was going to make me get a PS3, R2 was the "showcase" that I thought the system would need - something ridiculous in scope, with huge diversity in gameplay - a blockbuster that would knock my socks off.

No.

I mean, maybe it's just that I played the incredibly well-paced and drop-dead gorgeous Gears 2 campaign. Maybe it's that I'd played the incredible Call of Duty 4 last year, whose campaign has spoiled me for any other single player shooter.

While Resistance 2 has scale, it's not pretty. Textures look look relatively bland - hell, the Chimera, close up, look muddy. From afar, they look plain. Environments are nice from a distance, but bland close-up. Weapons lack punch. They're not particularly intuitive, as their alternate-fire modes often don't really make a huge amount of sense.

The game is DARK. Really dark. Not "moody" dark but pitch-f**king-black-all-the-goddamn-time dark. This is probably the trend that I hate the most in modern gaming. Playing a game like Valkyria Chronicles (which EVERYONE WITH A PS3 MUST OWN), the difference between being able to see things (fun) and not (not fun) couldn't be more clear.

Worst of all, though, are the one-hit kills, or moments where you can be killed in less than three seconds. The game has no cover mechanic - you can duck behind stuff, and you're told to do so, but if you're in cover, you can't shoot them AT ALL. So if you poke your head up to shoot, you get shot at. So cover sucks. But you're INCREDIBLY delicate, and get killed REALLY fast.

If someone's shooting an Auger at you, they can hit you through cover. Three shots, and you're dead. Miss a tricky platforming jump, end up in the water, and the shark-things kill you instantly. Invisible dude charging at you and you don't see him 'till it's too late, or you had the wrong weapon equipped? Instant death. Get in the way of a Hellfire turret? Instant death. Three flying drones catch you out of cover? Instant death. Big swarmy thing catch up to you? Instant death. Fail to run fast enough through something you couldn't possibly have known was coming? Instant death.

Death, death, death. There are so many one-hit kills in Resistance, it's mindboggling. It's as if the designers said, "We don't know what to do here," and the answer was ALWAYS, "Just kill the player."

I'm not done with the game (I'm in Chicago), and I'm sure I'll finish it eventually, but I'm not sure I want to. It feels like work. It's tedious, frustrating, and not very rewarding. The co-op mode and competitive modes, in contrast, are a blast. I've only played the co-op mode with one friend, and it's a mode that really doesn't work all that well with only two players, but it was STILL fun. And the competitive mode is great for sort of stupid deathmatch-style play.

But the single player campaign just doesn't work. It's a giant pain in the ass, with lots of cheap deaths, frustrating reloads, and lame design decisions.

I hate saying it, but I wouldn't recommend this game. Valkyria Chronicles or Uncharted would be better uses of your $$ by far.

Haha, good one! I'm totally with you there. Dark can't see = no fun! No matter how realistic they try to make it, it's still a video game right!?!

oh joy. another game where the lead guy is infected by the same virus he fights and will somehow use it to destroy the virus, before ultimately either finding a cure, or killing himself heroically.

what a treat. again.

Uh... the point is that I paid for the game, played it, and it has some serious problems. Given that if other people are going to be spending $60/pop for a game, it seems sensible that if a game has problems, they should hear about them, right?

Resistance 2 is too dark in a lot of places, and there's no in-game gamma correction. That's a problem. There are a LOT of one-hit kills in the game. There are a lot of places where you'll be killed without any warning or indication of how you died. For a PS3 marquee title, it's not a AAA-quality game - it's an AA-quality game that LOOKS (when it's not too dark) like something that should be better than it is.

It is good to hear negative opinions with positive opinions so other people can weigh the pros and cons and decide if it sounds like a game they want to spend their hard-earned money on.

Nothing wrong with that.

Help me out here. Why is it that you're so upset? Does his opinion somehow make yours wrong? Does this make the game any less enjoyable for you? Do you think they'll give you less at Nazi Germany...I mean, Gamestop...If they find out one person does not like it?

Opinions vary, because people vary. He has more of a right to voice his opinion about this game, than you do to attack him for it.

You can call it "bitching" and whatever else, but the fact remains that he simply didn't like the game. Much like how you don't like anything that takes more than four letters to spell.

So, I'm now one mission away from the end of the game, and I hate this game on sort of the same scale I hated Too Human. It's a great looking, technically impressive piece of shit.

The one-hit kills are really the bane of this game's existence, but more a symptom of a bigger problem - the whole game's designed around the philosophy of "Do what the designers intended OR DIE," and the game's communication with the player simply isn't strong enough to support that.

I loved Mirror's Edge - and it had a really similar problem - do something wrong, and you die. But they had a LOT of communication to the player - verbal cues, visual cues, etc. that made it feel like "your fault" when you failed to interpret what was going on and were killed.

Resistance 2, on the other hand, might throw you a vague verbal cue, but that's it. Fail to recognize that it's more than idle chatter, and you die. Everything becomes trial and error. And they have some of the worst checkpoint placement I've seen in a good while.

I really enjoy the co-op and competitive multiplayer aspects of this game, but the single player campaign is total shit. It's really weird, coming from Insomniac, whose other franchise (Ratchet and Clank) has SUCH a polished single-player experience that I'd expect nothing less than awesome from them. Resistance 2 isn't even close to competent, much less awesome.

Stay far away from this thing, unless you're in it for the multiplayer.

And the Leviathan boss battle? Lame. Really, really lame.

Finished the game this evening. I'm sorry, but it's complete crap. If anything, it gets *worse* at the end. Not to mention, it's got one of the single worst endings I've ever, EVER seen.

The credits roll for SO long that they literally run out of music to play over them. Even weirder, the credits contain a number of formatting bugs/inconsistencies. Lame. Honestly, one of the worst-designed FPS games I've played in years.

The worst thing is, there are any number of better solutions to the one-hit kills in the game. It's not like the AI doesn't know where the character is - firing "warning shots" before just hitting the character can preserve the "vulnerable" feeling while giving a reasonable player a chance to respond.

Similarly, the lighting should have been tested under a wide variety of conditions. The current level would imply that Sony QA/Insomniac didn't test their brightness levels properly. And honestly, while the various bits of dialog in the game are generally fine, if uninspired, the overall arc of the story is really... obnoxious. Not much to say without spoilers, but for huge chunks of the game, your character's either an idiot, oblivious, or both.

Feh.
