DarthChicken says,
If everything comes out like it's supposed to, this is really exciting. I (like many others) always wanted the PSP to be a good handheld system, and the design of the PSP2 looks like it may actually deliver. The best feature IMO is 2 analog sticks. That was the one thing in my opinion that not only made it difficult to create an enjoyable game on the PSP, but made it near impossible to play a PS3 game over the network.

Article excerpt from kotaku.com — "According to Pocket Gamer, who cite a developer working on the hardware, an all-new PlayStation Portable will be out and on store shelves before Christmas. This source repeats earlier rumours surrounding the design of the system - such as the fact it features a sliding screen (which reveals game controls) and also boasts Touchscreen...

I'd love to see a better, download-only focused PSP2. I wonder how much the iPhone is going to eat its lunch, though - while the DS shoots for the cheap/young crowd, the PSP shoots for exactly the market that would buy the iPhone.

Sure, it has more strengths, re: traditional "hardcore" gaming, and provided it has real, physical controls it'll have something the iPhone simply can't match. But it'll be interesting to see how the portable landscape has changed. :)

Problem with going download only is that retailers are going to push back. The margins on iPhones and iPods at traditional stores are likely very slim, but they probably sell so many that most retailers don't care. For gaming hardware, selling the hardware itself makes such little money that without the following software sales, retailers would be reluctant to support it in all likelihood.

In addition, traditional game sales are still well ahead of download sales. You can feasibly do both - have a much more unified online store that is accessible from the PSP2, and also allow for more traditional media-based games.

I wonder though (I really don't know the answer), would the publishers and developers really care if the retailers pushed back?

After all, the publishers really only want a good venue to sell their software, and download only would provide as much of a venue as retail only, just more convenient for the end user, and more opportunities for direct marketing and upsale.

Maybe they sell memory sticks, or something else, then, 'cause the UMD format sucks butt.

Well, if retailers push back, they will only give very limited shelf space to the hardware. If there is limited shelf space, it will receive limited attention from consumers. And if there are limited hardware sales, you'll have limited software sales.

That might help, but one would hope that a download-only hardware would ship with enough memory to not have to worry about that sort of thing. And even then, people might buy one extra memory stick... but vs 5-8 games? Not nearly as profitable.

Oh, sure - I guess what I'd rather see is a download kiosk or something, similar to how Nintendo did their DS demos. So maybe you have an in-store download kiosk, so as you're shopping you can grab something - and maybe you launch games into those retail kiosks in advance of putting them up on your download service. I just don't want to deal with physical media going forward. emote icon

Oh, I agree haha
It just ends up taking up space... But I don't see that happening just yet. I'm curious to see how the response will be from gamers when someone releases the first "big" iPhone game that is a more traditional modern gaming experience. The more casual stuff fits the current model because they're smaller investments and can be played on the run, but I wonder how receptive people would be to, say, downloading a AAA RPG, for example.

Just further clarification - I honestly *hope* that Sony goes this route, as I find it frustrating that retail has such an iron grip on entertainment. I just hope the company has the business savvy to be able to pull it off emote icon

I'm sure that they're going to pack a lot of memory into the thing. If any industry has boomed, in my eyes its the memory industry. Just a couple years ago the cost of a 128 MB flash drive was $100 + but now we can get 2 gigs for $10. Strip away all the excess material, and how much is the memory really worth? By far not what we've been paying for, that's for sure.

Also, each PSP game (depending on what) was more or less 1 Gig, so they'd better stuff some memory into that thing.
