Nintendo Announces Big Screen DSi
helava says,
Not sure I care. Yes, there are some genuinely interesting games for the DS/DSi, but I think Nintendo's approach to the DSi as a multifunction device has been laughable at best.
The cameras are low-quality to the point of irrelevance, there's no persistent connectivity, and the stylus interface just feels obsolete in the absence of handwriting recognition. The larger screens don't help any of that. DSiware has so far been almost entirely without redeeming value, and...
...well, as a portable gaming device, it might still be at the top of the heap for now, but the iPhone, and similar devices (Pre, Android, etc.) are approaching the multifunction aspect from the right angle - persistent, social, connected - where Nintendo's making cheap toys.
I've been wrong on numerous occasions re: predicting the future of game consoles (I think the Wii, save for Wii Sports, is a pointless pile of garbage, but I appear to be in the vast minority), but I just don't see the value in this device.

"The rumors are true. Today, at Nintendo 's press event in Tokyo , the company announced a revised version of the Nintendo DS.
Dubbed the Nintendo DSi LL, the new portable will feature a 4.2 inch screen. Priced at ¥20,000 (US$220) the DSi LL will be released on November 21. The "LL" refers to the extra large size.

I'm a fan of my DS lite. Nintendo's error is in trying to "upgrade" the device too quickly, with evolutionary -- not REVolutionary -- changes. I was miffed when they changed from the old DS to the DS lite (effectively making my original purchase a poor decision). Then, shortly after, the DSi came out. I didn't buy it because the DSlite was still fresh to me. Now the DS is getting updated again? It's too much, too soon.
Nintendo is trying to outpace the likes of the iPhone (and all those other devices helava talked about above), but they're doing it with inconsequential updates that only make the DS brand seem less and less relevant.
If they had stuck with the DS lite, really focused on innovation, and released a new, awesome hand-held in a few years (which is the way Nintendo has done it in previous hand-held generations), Nintendo would continue to be relevant and continue to be copied by other manufacturers. It would also allow Nintendo to focus on what they do best: making great software to sell their -- arguably inferior -- hardware.
As it is, they're losing market share because they're flooding the market with pointless (pun intended) updates.
