More Shots Of The Rumored PSP-3000
helava says,
I just started playing with my PSP again after picking up Final Fantasy Tactics on the cheap. It's still a good system - great screen, good primary controls, good sound. The problem is that the analog stick is absolute garbage, the load times suck (though they're supposedly better with the newer one), and the games themselves simply aren't that compelling.
The biggest problem is that none of the games (except possibly Beats, which I haven't played yet) really embrace the PSP as the multimedia machine Sony wants it to be. I can't see them releasing a new PSP without substantial hardware upgrades - if in addition to the internal mic, they add built-in GPS, then you've got a pretty substantial Skype machine...

"Additional "spy" photos of the alleged PSP-3000 hardware update that we posted last night have come to our attention, again courtesy of the PSPChina.net message board. These shots show off what appears to be a working prototype of the PlayStation Portable, said to have built-in microphone support, among other alleged new functionality...."

I actually, non-sarcastically assumed that they were going to stop developing PSPs. I don't know if it's sold well, but I don't know more than 3 people who own them and get games for them, whereas I know a ton of people with DSs and, now, iPhones, which suddenly feels relevant in the field of mobile gaming.
This piece of news took me by complete and utter surprise.

It's bizarre, but the PSP actually does appear to be selling pretty well. In Japan, Monster Hunter Portable 2 has moved *millions* of the things. Honestly, the only real niche I see the PSP filling is for when parents want to kick the kids off the TV, and the kids want the "home console" experience rather than the "portable" experience the DS provides.

That is just so weird. The more you say, the more I feel like I'm stuck in bizarro world. I'd be interested in seeing the US and Europe numbers. Europe & Japan tend to trend together, right?

Japanese Hardware sales - May 12 to May 18
- PSP: 70,536
- Wii: 41,572

- PS3: 7,701
- PS2: 7,022
- Xbox 360: 1,474

So, yeah. Surprising. The theory is that it's primarily Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, or that everyone who could possibly want a DS in Japan already has one. Still...

NPD sales figures for the US:
Wii - 675,089
DS - 452,608
PS3 - 208,709
360 - 186,500
No numbers for the PSP. A different article has:
2007 Total Hardware Sales
* Nintendo DS - 8,500,000
* Wii - 6,290,000
* Xbox 360 - 4,620,000
* PlayStation 2 - 3,970,000
* PSP - 3,820,000
* PlayStation 3 - 2,560,000
* Game Boy Advance - 1,120,000
With lifetime totals:
* PlayStation 2 - 41,120,000
* Game Boy Advance - 36,240,000
* Nintendo DS - 17,650,000
* PSP - 10,470,000
* Xbox 360 - 9,150,000
* Wii - 7,380,000
* PlayStation 3 - 3,250,000
These are as of Jan. 08, I believe. The PSP's got a respectable showing, but I think software sales might be a little soft just because the piracy scene is so rampant... though the same argument could be made for the DS. I dunno.

Argh. The first batch of numbers in the last comment are the sales figures in the US for the entire month of May, just to be clear.

Wow, ask and you shall receive, indeed! Were you cut off because the comment box's limit was too low? I can always raise it to much bigger, if that's what happened.

I did some browsing on my Wi-Fi using the PSP, and the clarity is very good. If only there were a built-in keyboard somehow, this would be awesome.
Admittedly, the only game I still play on the PSP is Lumines. I might have to check out more games. But I agree with Helava: the analog stick has never been good.

It's not a bad device - having the huge screen makes playing games really pleasant, and it can handle 3D graphics that look reasonable (unlike the DS). The problem is that because of the screen, it's ginormous, and because there's no built-in protection for it, the PSP + a case is unreasonably large. A slide-out QWERTY + GPS + mic would just make the whole thing even more unwieldy... Boo.
