MD5 Algorithm Hacked By PS3 Cluster
ebeast says,
Holy crap. This is actually pretty significant. SSL-encryption is pointless now. Uh oh.
Article excerpt from gearfuse.com —
"No joke. The MD5 algorithm, which is used widespread around the web for encryption, has been broken. A group of researchers used a cluster of PS3s to create a forged certificate authority, essentially enabling them to break into SSL-encrypted sites...."

It's pretty big. This doesn't mean that the Evil Powers That Be (tm) are going after your bank account. It doesn't mean that they've strung together 200 PS3s...
What it DOES mean is that anyone could. There are huge identity theft rings out there. They could easily do the same thing. This means that pretty much any site and user that relies on SSL is vulnerable.

Most certificate authorities have moved or are moving from MD5 to stronger hashing algorithms. Extended Validation certificates don't even allow the use of MD5.
Also, these guys didn't brute force attack MD5. They used a vulnerability in MD5 that was originally discovered in 2004 and extended in 2007.
