is Apple designing its next laptop based on the iphone? a touch web tablet?

This would be awesome if they could pull this off. i think i could do without a keyboard if done cleanly... I would hate the name "iNewton" though...

there is already a sanctioned wacom macbook hybrid that uses a touch screen. It has been out for four years - the big issue is if mac is going to cut into the profits of the other company to make "just a bit more apple"

I had one of the original Newtons. I loved the thing, despite its awful handwriting recognition (and my awful handwriting). Problem was, one of my friends stepped on it, and it cost more than the original price to replace the damn screen. Alas.
I think the difference between an Apple-designed touch-based notepad and the Wacom Macbook is that Apple would undoubtedly redesign the UI to make more sense as a touch-based interface. You'd have a lot of the iPhone's usability in a larger form factor, instead of just a touchscreen MacBook.
It'll be interesting to see what happens as touch-based interfaces become more prevalent. I'd read recently someone thought the mouse only had five more years to live. I dunno if I agree with that - the current desktop form factor has a lot of advantages, and I'm not sure my workflow would be improved by having to reach up and touch the screen.
