I think this is *absolutely* true. The iPhone games they showed today were at least on par with the DS. I think other phones have failed because they've never been *good* at what they do. Even the N-Gage, sadly, wasn't a good gaming platform.
While the iPhone isn't a dedicated games machine like the DS or PSP, it does everything *well enough* to justify it being the only gadget you carry around. If I can get even 80% of the quality I can get from a DS game on the iPhone (and there doesn't appear to be any technical reason I can't), I'll leave everything else at home.
That's one of Apple's really big successes - by making the UI so friendly and all the features so accessible, they've made a phone that not only has a staggering amount of functionality, all the functionality is *usable*.
Awesome stuff. I can't wait to see how it comes together.

Oh, and I don't think the specs for the iPhone are public, so it's impossible to say, hardware-wise, whether they're really on par with something like the DS or the PSP - but at first blush, just from the screenshots, it looks as though it's a more 3D-capable machine than the DS, and slightly less capable than the PSP (though the lack of UMD is a huge point in its favor).
