Important Protein For Pre-Brain Development Named Sonic Hedgehog
ebeast says,
So, I will fully admit this isn't "news" as this protein was named back in 2000 and this document was written in 2003. However, I would assume this is news to all of us, right?! It is one of the three "hedgehog" named proteins: sonic hedgehog, desert hedgehog, and indian hedgehog.
From the article: "Sonic hedgehog is, in fact, named after the character from the popular Sega Genesis video game. The original hedgehog gene was found in Drosophila and was named for the appearance of the mutant phenotype which causes an embryo to be covered with pointy denticles resembling a hedgehog. The first two homologues of hedgehog were named after species of hedgehog and the third was named after the video game character (Gilbert, 2000)."
So awesome.

That's pretty awesome. Reminds me of another weird naming thing. So, if you have position, and you take the mathematical derivative of that, you get velocity. If you take the derivative of that, you get acceleration. The derivative of acceleration is the jerk. Derivative of the jerk is snap. Of snap, crackle, and crackle pop.
Seriously.
