It isn't so much a flaw in the software programming as it is with the constraints of the technology itself. Since a webcam sees based on the numerical values of each pixel it has to look for dramatic changes between pixels to determine the location of specific features on the face. Without direct lighting on the face the contrast between those pixels is minimal on a black person while it would be accented on a white person. My Kodak camera has the exact same issue. Its face lock system cannot lock onto the face of a dark skinned black person without direct facial lighting. Unfortunately, webcams will not be able to see like the human eye for a very long time. Until computers can actually look at the image itself instead of the contrast between various pixels facial tracking will always have difficulty without direct facial lighting. On a side note... this is great news for black people. They do not have to fear the face recognition network setup on the security cameras in the bigger cities to track movements of criminals. They can prance safely in front of the cameras and not worry about "Big Brother" tracking them.

I doubt a camera can be racist, but maybe "racist" as in it thinks its a blind spot or thinks its having an issue with brightness...
