hmm... dante the poet with a weapon???
LD0ne says,
Ok so I saw this a few weeks ago while doing my endless searches for mindless entertainment during my 8 hour work day. I was like wait a minute Dante's Inferno as a video game?? hmmmmmm and after a few minutes of smoke pouring outta my ears and rusty gears in my heading turning around in protest from all the thinking I was doing I decided that this is going to be an awesome game first off here's the link for the trailer in case you haven't seen it before http://www.dantesinferno.com/home.action secondly the first thought that came to my mind was there is no crazy weapon wielding Dante in Dante's Inferno... In fact the story is like one of those Mexican Tours that you end up in a bus filled with chickens and sweaty smelly people and you end up breaking down in the middle of the jungle where huge Mosquito's come and take your children away. So i'm really really hoping that they geniuses at EA Redwood Shores (people who brought u Deadspace) can pull this off! we'll see no release date yet from what i can find but i'll keep my eyes open :D and this has been another rag brought to u by your friendly neighborhood sociopath ~LD~
Article excerpt from gamedaily.com —
"At the Spike VGAs, Electronic Arts finally revealed its new action adventure title Dante's Inferno. In development at EA Redwood Shores (Dead Space), the game is an adaptation of the medieval epic poem The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri and follows Dante as he journeys through the nine circles of Hell in pursuit of his beloved Beatrice...."

I can't even begin to express how both insulting and stupid this idea is.

I'm going to have to check out the trailer. It seems like there's been a big run of games pulling from literary/mythological plots. It's like all the magic of a licensed property, without having to pay anyone for a license.
I'm looking forward to some completely new stories though.

Except that (and excuse my nerd-ism) if you had read The Divine Comedy, you'd see that Dante's Inferno doesn't lend itself AT ALL to a video game, especially this video game. That's why I'm so pissed about this: not because they're making a game based off an old book/poem, but because they're not even remotely close to being close to remotely nearby the themes and issues covered in the original Inferno.
It's not like Dante was a cross-wielding Bad-ass demon slayer. Judging by the trailer, EA thinks he was.

Good points. Unfortunately, I've never read The Divine Comedy so I was missing the gist of your comment. From what I do know from general knowledge, it seems like a lot of the story is based on the internal struggles as manifested as physical obstacles/enemies, but the real crux of it isn't the action but the depth of the internal/moral struggles and the agony of the physical struggles, and as you say, not some sort of demon-slaying action game.
This raises a bigger point though. Do you think, apart from this particular implementation, that the story is something that couldn't be captured by any game, period? It seems like we are always pushing the boundaries, and it's something to shoot for.

I'm a big beliver in video gaming's ability to capture pretty much any subject and turn it into a game. I'm not saying it cannot be done. I'm saying that EA's trailer plainly shows that they aren't even trying.

I agree.
I only asked the follow-up question because of the part of your comment that said, "Dante's Inferno doesn't lend itself AT ALL to a video game," as you pointed out the particular way EA's version would not work at all.

i agree that Dante is not this weapon wielding evil stomping steroid pumping Arnold Schwarzenegger type character but that is what i'm waiting to see how they handled the adaptation into that kind of character cause i love going to hell kind of games and if they pull this one off it could really sweet. Also I don't think EA thinks Dante is that kind of character but they think that it makes for a really sweet concept that if done right could be a really sweet game

It's official. Every body is out of original ideas... except for comic books.

Yeah, it might seem like a contradictory statement, but I didn't mean it to be. Dante's Inferno doesn't lend itself to video games. I believe that to be true. Does that mean that a good game developer couldn't make it into a game? Nope. It can be done. It just doesn't LEND itself to the idea in the way that, say, the next Tom Clacy book would.
And I don't think EA's doing the story justice. But I've already made my point about that. Thanks for keeping me logical, ebeast!
