Faith From Mirror's Edge Fan-Designed For Asian Tastes
ThanksMK says,
I don't know if this representative of the Asian taste or rather just one guy's interest in a bigger boob Faith; however, it's an interesting topic. Personally I like the original picture, she looks stronger, and more agile, stronger character overall. What do you guys think?

"That's Faith, lead character of first-person- Parkour game Mirror's Edge. The game is designed by Swedish dev D.I.C.E., and naturally, the character exotic looks certainly look skewed towards Western tastes. The game, out in North America and Europe next month, is getting a Japan release in mid-December...."

The fan art makes her face much more rounded and softer. Frankly, it makes her look less kick-ass. I prefer the original. And you can run better with smaller boobs.
The altered face actually really reminds me of my old roommate's girlfriend. It's kinda freaking me out.

I agree, it's a bit too soft for her character, although I like the that her eye tat is gone. I didn't like that one very much. Well, actually, I don't know. I kind of like it but then I don't.

Yes! No. No! Yes. ;) I know what you mean. In some ways, it kind of makes her look tougher. Then it reminds me of Mike Tyson and what a douchebag he is.

I just noticed that they even changed the way the hair frames around the face. I'd definitely keep the hair the same. It's more no-nonsense and less I-have-to-blow-dry-my-hair-for -30-minutes.

Who needs blow drying, she's running and jumping off buildings. That's natural blow drying.
True, I didn't noticed that until you mentioned it. I guess Asian people really like that detail too. Gotta have that framing in frame

The redone version makes her cuter, which doesn't really fit the tough nature of the character (as pointed out previously). What I thought was interesting, though, is that she looks like she was modeled after the Japanese model, Aki Hoshino (do a GIS for her - no nude work, but lots of bikini stuff, so not really SFW).
Interestingly, though - I was just talking to some Japanese coworkers, and they all thought the original design for her looked like "what Americans think Asians look like." I told them that from an Asian American point of view, she looks perfectly fine. Asians in America simply look very different than Japanese in Japan, for instance.

Here is safe-for-work pic of her that I found:

I think you are spot on about the point of view difference between Asians in Asia versus Asian Americans.

I think what I like about the character is that she looks like a person. She's distinctive in a way that looks like she's *someone*. I didn't even think that DICE's intention was to make her "pretty" so much as distinctive. To me, the thing that's nice about her is that her eyes aren't enormous, that her boobs aren't bigger than her head, and that she sort of looks like she has a shitty haircut.
It gives her personality, and a sense of purpose. Rather than looking like "Asians," she looks like *an* Asian - of specific descent, with a specific character, with features that are specific to her. The redone version, for its cheesecake tart, is the same old garbage we've seen for decades - there's almost nothing interesting or distinctive about her. Nothing in her design evokes any sense of who she is, other than that she's "generic Asian-y female idol-type in sports clothes."
Not that that doesn't have its place, but for what she's supposed to do, the original Faith is a million billion times better.
