There's a really similar feature for Rock Band 2, where you can get figures made of your customized characers. Pretty awesome stuff.

I hope you give it another shot, because with the right group of people, it can be a really great time. My friend told me that she's had some experiences where some people would just hog the parts and not let other people play, which was no fun. When I get a bunch of people together, we all swap out and sing/play our favorite songs, and even some we've never heard of before. It is a nice feeling when a couple of people in the "band" struggle, but we make it through to the end with team work.
