Activision is really screwing this up. GH:A is timed just right, so that if they made this accessible to everyone, they could capture both the Rock Band and Guitar Hero audiences. But by making the controllers incompatible, there's no WAY that I'm gonna spend an extra $40 for a completely redundant peripheral.

This is so lame. Clearly, as can be seen by the fact that GH guitars can be used for RB, the hardware is compatible. It doesn't feel right that this should only work in one direction.
Is it Activision or is it the driver licensing that is holding things back? At some point, I had heard that it had to do with the cost of getting MS's permission to use their drivers, but I don't know if this is true.

Entirely Activision's fault. Harmonix has said repeatedly that they're fine with RB's guitars working in GH. When Harmonix attempted to release a patch to make the GH PS3 guitars compatible with RB on the PS3, Activision (the world's largest 3rd party publisher, so they have some clout) threatened Sony, and Sony caved - they never let the patch through their approval process.
So, screw Activision - it's a stupid move on their part, and a lousy way to treat the fans.
