Debate killer or fuel?
meh says,
Hmm so they have black members in the development team... They have people who are very well aware of historical racism... They check with the black population of their company to see if any part seems overly racist, or racist at all...
I say this debate is over and there is a great game out there to enjoy rather than argue over. (Well maybe in 7 months.)
Article excerpt from eurogamer.net —
" Resident Evil 5 producer Jun Takeuchi has defended the game against allegations of racism, saying he was "surprised" by the reaction it received.
He was responding to criticisms from journalists including Newsweek's N'Gai Croal, whosaid his first reaction to seeing a trailer for the game was, "Wow, clearly no one black worked on this...

Polling company members to see if they think a game their upper management wanted to make and/or are currenrly making is racists is inherently flawed for many reasons which I am hoping are obvious. And how many times have I found something to be racist or sexist or homophobic, only to have the offender claim that they have a minority/female/gay friend and they were not offended, therefore I shouldn't be? Now, I am not saying the game is evil or even racist, as I personally have not played it or seem in-game footage of it. What I *am* saying is that the content needs to be evaluated in and of itself on the basis of context (both in the game and in real life) and how people react to it. Is the journalist a single anomalous data point in a sea of people who don't thin its offensive? Or are most people who evaluate it in its context offended, just not the game developers? It is definitely not a cut and dried issue. Racism can and does exist even with a lack of intent to harm. People don't have to hate blacks and want to hurt them in order to have taken actions that are racist against blacks. I am reserving judgment until more people see the full content.

Frankly, I'm astonished there are black members of the RE5 development team. The game industry is, unfortunately, overwhelmingly a white male dominated industry. In the last five years, I've worked with less than 4 black people, out of a total of about 500 coworkers. That's less than a percent, and one of those companies had a much higher percentage than average of minority and female employees.
That there'd be more than one black person on a Japanese development team is really, really surprising... if true. I don't have any reason not to take what the guy's saying at face value, but it seems really unlikely.

...er... "white male dominated" in the US. In Japan, it's obviously "Japanese male dominated."

Perhaps they are talking about a US Branch of Capcom? I don't really know what they would be doing, mainly due to my lack of knowledge of cross-oceanic video game development. >_>.
