An Expensive Pile of S**t.
helava says,
I just grabbed some random article, because there wasn't anything that really captured what I wanted to say.
The idiots that designed the PS3 are idiots. The thing sucks in so many ways that it utterly boggles the mind. Three ways I discovered tonight:
1.) The internet connection: We changed from WEP to WPA2, which the PS3 doesn't support, because some of my wife's devices required WEP. Fine - but to change the PS3 to use a wired connection, I had to disconnect from the wireless connection it couldn't connect to. So I hit disconnect, and the thing basically got stuck on the disconnection screen. So I rebooted the thing, and it was disconnected, but while disconnected, YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE CONNECTION SETTINGS!
What kind of imbecilic jackass designed THAT?
2.) In order to view a message, you have to go to your message box, but the icon that someone sent you a message is on that user's profile listing in the XMB. But if you go to the new icon, and click on the profile, there's no option to read the message they sent you! Good lord, man - the 360's Live interface was out for YEARS before you designed the message system for the PS3. Were you so poor you couldn't afford a 360 to do some basic competitive research? What the hell is wrong with you?
3.) When I couldn't connect to the internet, I got a code with a collection of numbers and letters that UTTERLY FAILED to give me any indication of how the particular failure occurred, or what I might be able to do about it.
4.) The dead zone in the middle of the PS3's controller's analog sticks (and this is a problem that's plagued the controller since the original PSX's analog controller) makes the sticks unresponsive and useless for FPS's. As a result, the controls in Killzone 2, a very, very pretty game, are awful.
I'm sorry - I really want to give the console the benefit of the doubt. But it's actively user-hostile, a giant pain in the ass in many ways, and so frustrating and inconsistent in the design of its functionality that I actively don't *like* using it. Almost every feature of it requires you to jump through some pointless hoop - installing a demo? OF COURSE, THAT'S WHY I DOWNLOADED IT, A$$HOLE! The PSN interface sucks. Home's a useless pile of worthless trash.
Even the much-vaunted "art" games - Flower and Everyday Shooter were incredibly disappointing. And Resistance 2 - holy s**t don't get me started on how much I hated that game... Yeah, there's good stuff on it - Uncharted, Ratchet... but they'd be *better* on the 360, without question. The PS3's just an awful, awful machine.
Sorry - I know this is total flame bait, but I f'ing hate the thing tonight.

lol, It ok let it all out bro... ps3 is a beta stage for the next system IMO.. They're gonna pull a original xbox move and Fail..Then next time around they will do well..I mean look at it, they have so much going on Home ( useless right now) PSN is just the basics to play online. They are more concerned with giving us TV shows and movies then giving us a great gaming experience something 90% of ps3 owners want...

The other thing that I encountered tonight: If you're typing a message to a friend, if you exceed the subject line's character count, it just starts not auto-completing your words, it just deletes the characters you've input. There's no indication that you've hit a character limit.
Dumb.

Played a handful of the co-op - first three levels or so. I like it fine - it's pretty, but gameplay-wise, it ain't no Call of Duty 4.
The multiplayer's fun, but the big problem is that the controller just isn't up to the task. The DS3's analog sticks are so unresponsive that it's impossible to make small adjustments to your aim - as a result, everyone turns in a general direction, then strafes around to fine-tune their aim. It all looks kind of absurd.
I like the fact that you have multiple gametypes that cycle out during a single game - I think that's really clever. But I've played for an hour+ now, and I've got a whopping 1 weapon in multiplayer and no additional abilities, yet if there were a goddamned medic in the game, it would actually turn the tide of battle. Instead, I'm doomed to wait 10 seconds every time without anyone playing as a medic. Not great.
I think the biggest problem is this: You could argue that Killzone 2 is the best looking game ever made, and you'd probably be right. But it just doesn't matter. Call of Duty 4 is a better FPS, Halo 3 has better matchmaking, and any top-tier shooter on the 360 will wipe the floor with the PS3's best simply because of the differences in controller and Live.
So, I like the game, but... this isn't going to move PS3's. And doubly so, given Sony's complete failure to promote the game. Sony's going to have to pull its head out of its ass really soon, or they're done for this generation.

Sorry - the point re: KZ2's visuals: It may be the best looking game ever made, but it's not the best looking game ever made *by enough*. The art direction is very bleh - grim, grey, done to death in other games, and the technical details, while nice, aren't even enough to make it stand out in a crowd.
I realize that may be ludicrous to some people, but despite Uncharted's much inferior graphics from a technical perspective, it's a much more recognizable, pleasing game to look at.

...and another thing: Within the game, there's a link to Killzone.com, where when the webpage loads on the PS3's browser, I'm told to update my Flash installation, and that the rest of the site is inaccessible to me. WTF?
Seriously. WTF. You have an entire feature from the main menu that doesn't work at ALL.

its 30 a year now cannon.. Helava you should send me a psn invite. We can get alittle KZ clan going then you will have all the classes needed to play the game like it should be played cause when you go into a random room people are all about themselves and barely any team work is used.
My psn is in my profile if you wanna throw me a invite when you done being mad at your ps3 lol, i feel you on your points though..

Weren't you also upset that one day when you tried to play some game (before you got your own ps3) and realized that there isn't an option for multiple save slots?
Or was that just for that game?
And ha, the Sony error codes. Got so many of them on my psp that I actually memorized a few of them. At least they elaborated in general terms on that. At least.
And yeah, I've head about the class drama in KZ2. Everyone blames it on everyone else but it seems more fingers point toward the medics.

Not to sound angry or anything, but if it REALLY bothers you THAT much then just get rid of the system. At least the thing doesn't have an RROD

No, I never got that far into PS3 to find out it didn't have multiple save slot's. My PS3 got returned with in a week after I found out it wasn't reverse compatable, and the online play sucked, plus the pathetic selection of games was a big turn off.

Oh sorry I meant to quote helava. My bad.
Nice move, though.

Yeah - Heavenly Sword. Only one save slot per profile, which I thought was incredibly dumb. Lots of games do it, but I hate it every time.

It bothers me because it *should* bother me. It's poor design, a poor user experience, and those things matter to me. Those things weighed heavily on my decision to get the system. Now that I've gotten it, it's had some good (LBP, Uncharted), and some bad (Resistance 2, UI issues), and some awful (freezing when disconnecting from a failed 'net connection).
I don't want to get rid of it, because the good on it is still good. But it sucks that the bad's even THERE given that they had years to work out the kinks, and even a better model (the 360) which had been out a year already.
This is going to sound really ridiculous to most people, but I'd take the better user experience of the 360, even *with* the RROD problems than the constant inconsistencies and annoyances of the PS3.
I realize that's not going to be everyone's view, and that's fine - but that's my experience. Fortunately, I don't have to choose. But that's not going to mean that I'm going to enjoy the parts of the PS3 that were designed by baboons.

Hopefully Microsoft's hyping of the Jasper chipset is true, at least so far I haven't seen anyone report a RROD on it. However that may be due to the fact that people aren't going to go out and buy a new 360 because of a new chipset and let the old one collect dust in the corner.
But I'm hopefully. Still, everytime the slightest thing goes wrong with my Jasper, I get a heart attack.

One thing that bugs me about the PS3 is they didn't think through the Trophy system enough. I mean, when you're playing an offline 2+ player game, only ONE profile can earn Trophies. The other players aren't allowed to sign in their profiles and are, therefore, given the shaft.

All I can say is from the experience of playing the PS3 is, The Games are made to be way to shiny for a Console that is being rated lower then a Wii. I think PSN is doing there 'Old fashion' Quantity over Quality again... If any one remembers the war between the PSX and the N64. The N64 Produced more smoother game play as the PSX pelted out more and more crappy games then one Game Shop could handle. Now there doing the same thing, but, in lamens terms "Polishing the Terd". Making Flashy, shiny, games that are more for the looks, then the game play. PS3 so far looks like its living off the Name brand Titles like Killzone, Metal Gear, and Grand Turismo for rent money, and all the other games for Bus fair to and from work.
I will stick with my 2004 conclusion after my PS2 Finally died, and stick with Xbox. Red ring or not. Its better then buying a $500 paper weight.

Helava smash!
In all seriousness, aside from the small detail about the console being notoriously difficult to developer for, there's nothing *inherently* wrong with the tech. It's the interface that makes it feel significantly inferior to the X360. Tech/spec-wise, they go toe to toe... but MS has managed to refine the overall experience and Sony really needs to take notice.
