The reason, I think that the North American and Japanese mappings on the Dualshock are reversed for X and O is the average hand size is larger outside Japan. So, when your hands rest of the controller, an "average" Japanese thumb sits closer to O, while an "average" American thumb sits closer to X.

Cool observation, I never thought of that, I guess the Japaneze hands would be slightly smaller than an American hand.. Hmmm, u learn something new everyday..

And since many women's hands are smaller than men's, no wonder I find the Japanese controllers for comfortable.
